Daily in the U.S., people are experiencing significant losses due to a fire. Fires cannot only harm your family, but they can cause a large amount of loss in terms of the possessions that you have worked so hard to buy. To thwart or at least decrease the probable loss, take a few fire prevention steps.

The best that you can do to ward off a fire is to be careful and watch for potential fire starters. The kitchen is a common source of fire in homes. One smart thing to do is to keep paper, cloth and other flammables at a minimum three feet away from the stove. It doesn’t matter if you have a gas or electric stove; these types of flammables are risks. Rolling up sleeves and making sure that aprons and other cloth materials are out of the way is another good safety practice. If you have long hair, watch out for that as well as hair can easily catch fire. Stoves and grills need to be watched the entire time. Stay close by, or at least keep the stove and grill in your line of vision.

Home heating is another area in which some vigilance will pay off. Fireplaces, for instance, should have a screen guarding the rest of the home from stray sparks. Keep logs and brush wood away from the fireplace, as well as anything else that is flammable. You should also have your chimney cleaned annually, in order to get rid of the creosote that builds up in the chimney. Creosote build-up can cause chimney fires, which is one of the worst types of house fires.

Space heaters are another potential fire hazard. Keep flammable items at least three feet away from them. Don’t use extension cords with space heaters, either, because extension cords could easily melt from the electrical current which space heaters use. If you use a kerosene space heater, you need to be especially cautious. In addition to making sure the heater is on a level surface, investigate all of the rules and regulations associated with this heating method, and never leave a kerosene heater alone.

Making a fire plan for your house can save many lives, including those of your children and pets, and reduce the damage to your house. The chief step is to install smoke detectors. A detector in every room is most favorable, but you should at least install two smoke detectors on every story. Once a year, replace the batteries in every smoke detector, and test the batteries often.

Having fire extinguishers in your home is another great way to keep your family safe from a fire. Have one on every level of your house. Learn how to use the fire extinguisher and teach everyone in your home how to use it as well. Even though there are no assurances in terms of fires, preparing ahead of time can make you and your family safer.
