For indoor use you would try to heat the outdoors it was 15 deg here this morning.

Kerosene heaters are not very efficient when first lit. They smoke and smell until they get hot. I light mine outdoors and let it burn for about 5 minutes, cut it off, and relight it as soon as I get it in place inside. That way it is still hot enough not to smoke the house up.

The burning of any fossil fuel releases carbon monoxide gas kerosene or what us country folk call white gas is no exception although it may be safe to bed.
