Can diesel fuel be safely used in a kerosene heater?

russellj_1998 asked:
Kerosene at the local big box store is around $10/gal while diesel fuel is under $3/gal.
I know that diesel and kero are very close to each other but do not know if diesel is safe to use.
Please site sources and/or experience.

I know it will burn diesel, but is it safe?
Only thing manual says is “Do not use gasoline”, for reasons obvious to me.

The kerosene would not be more refined and therefore safer to burn.
