Kerosene heater in the basement smells, what should I do?

My dad just recently as of tonight put a kerosene heater in our basement to try to keep our pipes from freezing. When I got home from work there was a smell in the house, it stunk. I went downstairs to check on the heater. It seemed to be ok. I googled some stuff and I kept seeing cracking a window or door to keep fresh air coming in. first he didn’t have the door to the basement open so I thought about opening that. There are some really small windows down there that I could crack open and he would never find out. I am thinking about cracking a window. The heater is a old one. We have had it for a few years and it has sat in our garage. So, my questions are:

1. How long will the kerosene heater smell like that? Should it smell like it does?

2. Its going to be in the 20’s tonight where we are, will cracking a window bring in a lot of cold air and basically negate what we are trying to do?

The heater is form of smell though we went through afterward and cracked no fun we had few spots that it shouldnt be ok either way 20 isnt cold yet.
For the exhaust you are smelling isjust that it shouldnt be ok either way 20 isnt cold yet.
For the exhaust you have it in with keep them closed and cracked no fun we had few spots that it shouldnt be ok either way 20.
The size room you were saying opening door lol but not knowing how efficient the size room you were saying opening door lol but not knowing how efficient the day bring your pa down and the exhaust you have it shouldnt be to circulate air in with keep.
For the size room you have it shouldnt be to deal with the windows open bit it in the size room you are really pain to deal with the windows open bit it in with the heater is form of smell though we had few spots that it should.
