Kerosene Heaters Fuel Type?

I am looking to purchase a kerosene ehater. I was reviewing what the box said and it said to use only K1 kerosene. Lowes has K1 kerosene right next to the heaters, but it is $60 for 5 gallons. That is outragous. Can I just go to my local gas station and use their kerosene from the pump? What is K1?
