What is the best kind of heater for my garage/shop - Electric, Kerosene, Propane, Wood? Or?

Don P asked:

I have a 10′ x 40′ shop, but only need to heat the area around the workbench and the power tools I use (tablesaw, etc.).

Anyone have experience with heating such a shop? I don’t want to heat the entire shop, just the area I’m working in, but partitioning it off with curtains won’t work because I use large pieces of wood, and also have a high ceiling.

Would you recommend a kerosene heater? A propane, forced air heater (like the reddy-heater)? An electric heater of some sort? I do have 240 VAC available, but I’m guessing that an electric heater would be expensive to operate.

I’ve tried a radiant heater, but that only warms the area directly in front of it. So with a radiator or radiant heater, I would need to have several surrounding me and my work (the shop’s too big to heat the entire area efficiently).

Anyway, I’d appreciate any suggestions you might have. Thanks!

Patricia
