How long do heaters normally last and how can you tell if it’s malfunctioning?

Pumpkin asked:

I have one 200 watt Aqueon heater that is normally set for around 80F. When I woke up this morning the water was at 77F and a few of my fish were huddled around the heater which they never do. I’ve had this heater for about 2 years and there’s water vapor on the inside.

How long do heaters last?
Is mine malfunctioning?
(If it is, what are some good trusted heaters?)
